- Abstract
This article deals with the ethnogenesis model (created by German historian Reinhard Wenskus) and how it was developed and applied by Herwig Wolfram vis-à-vis the Goths. The author notes that Wolfram’s thesis, which was once viewed favorably, has, with time, fallen out of favor with scholars, becoming the target of much criticism. In this piece, the author conducts a critical, objective assessment of Wolfram's research, methodology, and conclusions. He presents various aspects of Wolfram's work which are not supported by concrete data, and notes the conclusions are little more than unsupported suppositions. Thus criticized are: Wolfram's interpretations with regard to the tribal memory of the Goths; the three motifs concerning the Gothic origo gentis; and the theory of the divine origin(s) of the Goth Amal dynasty.
