ARGONAUTAS DO EXTREMO: O PROCESSO DA CONQUISTA ATRAVÉS DAS PAISAGENS MARÍTIMAS DE UM BOM ABRIGO.
- Authors
DURAN, Leandro D.
- Abstract
This article is a reflection on the nautical conquest of Portuguese America during the 16th and 17th centuries, perceiving nautical routes as concret and symbolic structures materialized by reference points or "markers" which were defined not only to guide ships and orient them but also to dominate new territories. Within this process, ocean spaces and not land areas were the first arenas of tension and disputes between native Indians and the European invaders, as well as among different European nations themselves. In this sense, the island of Bom Abrigo (Good Haven), here considered as a major artifact, is seen as a maritime structure, settled in the landscape and in historical records, as being the element of support for the colonial expansion that took place in the coastal region of what is today the State of São Paulo, Brazil.
