The article discusses the views of English theologian John Wyclif on papal election, correction and deposition. It is suggested by the author that the reason for examining Wyclif's views on such issues is that they all speak to those criteria which are essential for constituting a genuine pope as opposed to a mere pretender to the throne. The views of Wyclif as depicted in his works, including the 1384 "De potestate papae," are also analyzed.
