- Title
EVE’S OPINION: SPIRIT-POSSESSION AND THE WITCHES’ SABBATH IN EARLY MODERN EUROPE.
- Authors
WILBY, EMMA
- Abstract
The article examines the possible correlation between beliefs and experiences associated with demonic possession and narratives of attendance at the witches' sabbath in early modern Europe. Topics include the reason for the lack of interest in this coerced-sabbath narrative, an underexamined claim by Hungarian folklorist Éva Pócs about the popular predecessors of witches' sabbath images, and ways in which the state of being a witch and the state of being possessed by the Devil differ.
