- Title
God's Names and Their Uses in the Books of Magic Attributed to King Solomon.
- Authors
VÉRONÉ, JULIEN
- Abstract
The article reports on the use of divine names in several medieval texts ascribed to King Solomon, which constitute the main bulk of ritual magic. The author focuses his study on "Clavicula Salomonis," two versions of "De quattuor annulis," the "Almandal," and "Liber Bileth." In the Judeo-Christian tradition, the number of names of God runs in the hundreds, and the most frequent is the name Adonay or My Lord/Lords, followed by Jesus Christus and Theos. As reported by Peter of Abano, the general opinion never questioned these names' supernatural power.
