- Abstract
I narrate the story of how I was reduced from a fully employed, capable mother to a person alone and destitute following extensive hospitalization. Interactions with treatment professionals are recounted and analyzed in provide insight into how relationship problems between clients and therapists can shape the vulnerable client into a "borderline personality." The detrimental consequences of institutionalization, medication, and electroshock therapy are described. Therapeutic posturing more conducive to successful outcomes is recommended as an alternative to that of the traditional medical model.
