- Abstract
Every woman who lives long enough will experience menopause. Yet menopause remains clouded by considerable controversy regarding what it is and how it is best treated. Women are offered conflicting advice as to whether menopause is best regarded as an endocrinopathy needing routine, long-term treatment with estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) or a natural, developmental event needing no medical intervention (Scott & Cumming, 1985; Utian, 1987). The divergent opinions and recommendations to which women are exposed may compromise their ability to make informed decisions about ERT. The focus of this study was women's beliefs about menopause and their decision-making process regarding whether or not to use ERT.
