- Abstract
This article focuses on the book "The Speaker," by William Enfield. In the second half of the eighteenth century and in the early nineteenth the practice of elocution was guided largely by a plethora of manuals which served as the evangelists of elocution. Enfield's "The Speaker" was one of the most popular and widely used manuals from the time of its original publication in 1774 through the middle of the nineteenth century. The general plan of the manual, typical of school manuals, includes an introductory essay of fourteen pages sketching Enfield's theory of elocution and its pedagogical application, followed by 340 pages of selections for oral practice.
