Economic Cleansing: Failure Dressed in Fine Clothes.
- Authors
Sassen, Saskia
- Abstract
The article discusses the concept of economic cleansing to describe measures and indicators that fail to gauge losses and to examine complex conditions in the global South since the 1980s. It outlines some examples of economic cleansing including the long-term unemployed, the failed small business whose owners often give up and commit suicide, and the poverty-stricken middle-class citizens who live in their modest neat homes but keep losing ground. Also discussed is the implementation of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank restructing programs in the 1980s.
