- Abstract
Problem: The studies of the English-language accent preferences of prospective and practicing businesspersons from around the world have not been integrated. Research Questions: What are the English-language accent preferences of prospective and practicing businesspersons from around the world, and how are those preferences influenced by the dominant national or regional culture and English-language accent? Research Method: Meta-analysis Results: The English-language accents were rated in this order: (a) General American English and Received Pronunciation (British) English, first and second (tie); (b) Australian English, third; (c) Estuary English, fourth; (d) Indian English, fifth; and (e) Japanese English, sixth. A meta-analysis confirmed that the findings from the four studies are highly consistent (p < .001) in spite of variations in dominant national or regional culture and local English-language accent. The dominant national or regional culture and local English-language accent match and appear to influence the preference for a specific English-language accent. Recommendations: Business educators and linguisticians should assist prospective and practicing businesspersons from around the world in their development of General American English or Received Pronunciation (British) English accents for business purposes if they desire to modify their accents. Business educators and linguisticians should conduct additional related research.
