- Abstract
Recently there has been an increasing interest in the study of narratives as a typical type of human discourse activity. In contrast to previous investigations, which have centered on monolingual populations of various ages, the present study compares narratives by two bilingual groups of university students of different cultural background. These narratives are further compared to those of two groups of monolingual university students of similar background to that of the bilingual groups. The results show culturally and linguistically motivated differences, as well as differences driven by bilingual effects in the process of recounting events in two languages. The bilingual narrative provides a unique and intriguing opportunity to study the complexity of interface between language, culture and cognition.
