- Abstract
In the second half of the nineteenth century, with rising incomes and growing amounts of leisure time, pleasure boating emerged as a new sector of the maritime economy. The Riviera Ligure, with its mild climate and strategic position on the north coast of the Mediterranean, became one of the preferred destinations for upper-class yachtsmen. During the first decades of the twentieth century, several commercial and fishing ports along the Ligurian coast began to reserve wide portions of available moorings for this sector producing substantial changes in harbour facilities and in the life of the small seaside resorts of the Riviera. After World War II, a progressive development of pleasure boating took place in Italy, albeit with a certain delay compared to other European countries, and an increasing number of boat owners looked to the Riviera as their destination, in the process creating a large demand for berths which even today has not been completely satisfied. This paper examines the connections between the development of pleasure boating in Italy and the building of yacht harbours and marinas in Liguria, as well as the impact this has had on the regional economy during the twentieth century.
