- Abstract
During the last stages of the First World War, the Mabeyn Orchestra went on a trip that began on December 25, 1917 to give concerts for the benefit of the Bulgarian, German and Austro-Hungarian Salib-i Ahmer [Red Cross] Societies. The motivation behind this campaign was to return the favour, since the allied music ensembles had previously come to the Ottoman lands and performed for the benefit of the Hilal-i Ahmer [the Red Crescent] Society. But the main purpose was to carry out publicity and propaganda activities. The first stop of the Mabeyn Orchestra, which would have its first concert abroad was Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. Following concerts were performed in cities such as Berlin, Dresden and Munich in Germany; Vienna and Pest in Austria-Hungary. Although there were some criticisms about the concert program, which lasted more than a month, it presented a successful example of a cultural diplomacy in general. The orchestra made a positive impression on both the Ottoman Empire and the Allied States. This study aims to examine the travel and concert programs independently and in detail. The developments such as the preparations and the realization of the trip are also analysed within the framework of ideas, impressions and results. The article employs primary sources such as archival documents, periodicals and memoirs in addition to the relevant secondary sources.
