- Abstract
The article examines the Tarzan book series from the writer Edgar Rice Burroughs, who first wrote the book "Tarzan of the Apes" in 1912. Particular focus is given to the many film adaptations of Burroughs' work, including July 2016's "The Legend of Tarzan." Additional topics discussed include how Tarzan books depict race, class, gender, and modernity, how many of Tarzan's adventures take place in the jungle of French and Belgian Congo, Portuguese Angola, and British and German East Africa, and the importance of literacy in the Tarzan story.
