- Abstract
The article discusses the history of Peru under the leadership of Christian Democrat president José Luis Bustamante y Rivero. It discusses the oligarchies which ruled Peru prior to the 1945 free election in which Bustamante won, efforts to promote industrial development and increase the distribution of wealth, and efforts by the opposing political party the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA) to hinder the success of Bustamante. The APRA led a coup, ousting Bustamante and his government, and exiling the president in 1948.
