An Error in the Introduction to "A Moveable Feast: The Restored Edition."
- Authors
Yarup, Robert L.
- Abstract
In the introduction to the restored edition of Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast" (2009), Hemingway's grandson, Sean Hemingway, states that the title for the book was suggested to Mary Hemingway by "A.E. Hotchner, who recalls Ernest mentioning the phrase to him at the Ritz Bar in Paris in 1950" (12). Yet if we turn to the source cited in editor Hemingway's end-note 19, A. E. Hotchner's "Papa Hemingway: A Personal Memoir" (New York: Random House, 1966), page 57, we find that when Hemingway made the remark that "Paris is a moveable feast" to Hotchner, they were at Hemingway's favorite café, the Closerie des Lilas on the Boulevard du Montparnasse, and not the Ritz Bar in Paris.
