- Title
AUGUSTINE ON ENJOYING ONE'S NEIGHBOR: UTI-FRUI ONCE AGAIN.
- Authors
Dodaro, Robert
- Abstract
This article deepens our understanding of what it means in Augustine's thought to enjoy (frui) one's neighbor "in God" (in deo/propter deum). The problem of neighbor-enjoyment arises out of a century of Augustinian scholarship aimed at resolving challenges to his concept of neighbor-love formulated originally by Anders Nygren and Hannah Arendt. Although scholars who have published in response to these challenges have correctly defended his appreciation of the neighbor as such, they have omitted any extended description of the kind of enjoyment of the neighbor that Augustine deems legitimate. This article demonstrates that, for Augustine, a legitimate enjoyment of the neighbor involves enjoyment of the neighbor's good.
