- Abstract
The present study aims to outline some cultural differences in adulatory styles and in how to formulate, receive and reject compliments or flirtatious remarks in different languages and cultures. An overall classification of compliments is presented, as well as a typology of flirtatious remark-reply and compliment-reply sequences with examples from different languages: Spanish, English, Bulgarian and Polish. Although the study focuses on these four languages, it also refers to others with their respective cultural differences and strategies used to respond. This is a bibliographical revision that combines quantitative and qualitative research in the use of an openquestion questionnaire as a tool. 76 university students from the University of Granada (Spain), Faculty of Science Education (years 2009 and 2013), participate in the study. A sample of 326 compliments and flirtatious remarks has been obtained from men (219) and women (107). The study has confirmed a universal part of compliments and flirtatious remarks, and other more specific, which depends on each language and culture.
