The article discusses U.S. interests in the Balkan Peninsula in the peace process during the First World War, which was listed by then President Woodrow Wilson in his "Fourteen Points" speech delivered on January 8, 1918. Topics discussed include the concept behind the "enlightenment trinity" promoted by the U.S. government during the Balkan peace process and how language was used to determine dominant ethnic affiliation in a mixed population.
