Title
Caribbean monk seal declared extinct.
Abstract
The article reports that the Caribbean or West Indian monk seal has been cited to be extinct, after a 5-year review by American researchers. The seal has become extinct because of human causes. The seals were exploited, primarily for their blubber. According to the author, lessons learned from the extinction of the Caribbean monk seal could help safeguard the two remaining monk seal species, the Endangered Hawaiian monk seal and the Critically Endangered Mediterranean monk seal.
