PARAGRAPH COMPOSITION: A SUGGESTED SEQUENTIAL OUTLINE.

- Abstract
Several comments about this suggested outline seem in order. One, this outline does not imply that paragraph composition needs to be studied as a discrete unit, isolated from other writing skills. In fact, children may better and more easily acquire the major learnings if these are incorporated into a larger unit, report or stow writing for example. Two, numerous skills essential to good paragraph composition were intentionally omitted. Two of these are the use of (1) varied sentence patterns and (2) synonymous subjects. They were omitted, not because they are unimportant, but because they are general writing skills and are not unique to paragraph writing. These omitted skills should be an integral part of all writing. In fact, they may be important enough to deserve their own separate systematic instruction. Three, grade level designation has been deliberately omitted. Achievement and ability ranges differ so greatly within and between classrooms that a teacher trying to fit all pupils to the same mold may be unwittingly defeating her real goals. With handy guides like this, the enterprising teacher could dip into it according to the needs and abilities of her pupils and proceed instructionally at an appropriate pace. Thus, these are not standards all pupils are expected to attain but rather guidelines to help the teacher select and plan appropriate goals and learning activities commensurate with the needs and abilities of her pupils. In a sense, this outline is a tool. And just as the knowledge and skill of a surgeon determines how successfully he wields a scalpel -- or other tools, so will these same factors determine how successfully teachers use this -- and similar -- outlines.
