- Authors
Vargesson, Neil
- Abstract
The article discusses the medical challenges of thalidomide. It notes that thalidomide is a glutamic acid derivative which consists of a glutaramide ring and pthalimido ring. Thalidomide is originally marketed as a sedative and anti-hypnotic in 1957 by Chemie-Grunenthal for the effective relief of morning sickness during early pregnancy. However, thalidomide was the reason behind the increase in birth defects especially in the limbs, ears and eyes.
