The article examines the role and the function of collectins in innate immunity. Collectins are humoral molecules of innate immune system, they are a family of calcium-dependent lectins that recognize pathogen-associated molecular patterns. Their domain dimensions and flexibility increase interactions with unique sugar arrays on microbial surfaces, which they act as potent opsonins.
