- Abstract
Throughout history many artists at some point in their career turned to the past and sought to explore how the use of images and symbols of antiquity could be applied in a contemporary art context. My research, as a fine art practitioner as well, seeks to re-evalute these artistic attempts and continue this enquiry through a creative process grounded specifically on the study of the ancient vase painting (8th-5th cent. BC) of Cyprus. The aims of the investigation are the following: 1) To evaluate the possible contribution of studying antiquity and specifically the ancient Cypriot images, as a means of expanding the contemporary art practices. 2) To investigate the parallels of ancient and modern image making, and subsequently to that, to explore the fundamental qualities of a universal visual language within art. The methods of this investigation involve a study of the actual artifacts, in order to understand the creative process, and the collaboration with specialized archaeologists. Finally the practice based methodology involves an investigation into the application of a study of ancient art to contemporary means of creation, such as contemporary painting, animation and interactive installations.
