- Abstract
The use of tests to evaluate athletic performance can be a valuable tool for maximizing the results of competitions in athletic horses. Exercise induces reversible changes in ultra structure of the skeletal muscle of horses, as the elevation of muscle enzymes that are released into circulation. There are few studies assessing the biochemical muscle enzyme pure bred Lusitano horses. This study evaluated the effects of exercise on muscle enzymes aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) and creatine kinase MB fraction (CK-MB) of equine athletes before and immediately after exercise. We studied 30 healthy Pure bred Lusitano horses, male adult, undergoing physical exertion of trot and gallop, the animal's routine. The CK, CK-MB and AST are not significantly different after exercise even if the proportion of low concentration of these enzymes before and after exercise. In 83.33% of the animals studied, the LDH increased by 24.55% in the blood concentrations after exercise. The results obtained showed that equine bred Lusitano in training do not have elevated serum levels of CK, CK-MB and AST.
