- Abstract
The article analyses the phenomenon of disenchantment in the Basque Country during the Transition to Democracy. As the radical left gradually came to terms that expectations of secession were disappearing, this melancholic emotion became imbued with political significance. Memory played a foundational role in this experience and assigned it an ambivalent character. What remained of this illusion became deposited in the future. This hope sought to assuage a melancholic present caused by the defeat of the emancipatory pretensions of the most mobilized opponents of the Franco regime.
