- Title
THE ODD MAN OUT: THE KINGS IN CORNEILLE'S MACHINE PLAYS.
- Authors
Ekstein, Nina
- Abstract
The article examines the role of the king in Pierre Corneille's "Androméde" and "La Conquête de la Toison." Both kings are uncharacteristically lacking in the kingly attributes of honor, heroism and power. The flawed monarchs reveal the role of the king when he is not divine, but must share the stage with other gods. Corneille's representation argues that such monarchs have only to power to distribute blame and conceal their own follies.
