- Abstract
The research aimed at studying the annual, seasonal and monthly fluctuations of the average air temperature, precipitation and water balance on the natural distribution of Lebanese Cedar (Cedrus libani) in the natural reserves of Slenfeh and Jawbat Burghal in Syria during 1961-2010 time period for temperature and during 1961-2014 for the precipitation using the value of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) for natural forest stands of Cedrus libani that is based on the high resolution satellite images of Landsat during 1984-2014. The results showed a general trend towards the increase in NDVI of Cedar stands in Slenfeh and Jawbat Burghal at an annual increasing rate of 0.003 during 19842014. There were no significant correlation relationships between the annual, seasonal and monthly precipitation and NDVI for the natural forest stands. In contrast, there were significant positive correlation relationships between the average temperatures of spring and monthly temperature during January, March, April, May, June and NDVI and a significant negative correlation between the average temperatures of September and August and NDVI in Slenfeh. There were no correlation relationships between the annual, seasonal values of water balance and NDVI in Slenfeh and Jawbat Burghal but were significant positive correlation relationships with September and August in Slenfeh. Which reflects the good health status of natural forest stands of Cedrus libani in Syria on the one hand and affected by increasing air temperature on the other hand.
