- Abstract
Giuseppe Santarelli (1716-1790), a gifted virtuoso singer, had a successful career, first as an opera performer in the leading roles in the most important Italian theaters, then as a papal singer. He was in close relations with Francesco Algarotti, Charles Burney, Father Giambattista Martini and Pompeo Batoni, who made a splendid portrait of him, now preserved in the Civic Art Gallery of Forlì. The article reconstructs Santarelli's life based on numerous documents from his family archive, preserved in the "Aurelio Saffi" Civic Library of Forlì and recently made available for public consultation. This archive consists of seven sets of documents that cover a time span of over two centuries, beginning in the eighteenth century. Among decrees and medals, certificates and letters referring to the main members of the Santarelli family, included Giuseppe, the documents allow us to reconstruct the main stages of Santarelli's training and career, and to shed light on his activity as a teacher, composer and music historian, in particular on the circumstances related to his planned but unpublished two-volume treatise Della musica del Santuario. The documents present the image of a musician of great aspirations who reached an enviable social position, also thanks to the acquaintances he was able to maintain as a stubborn and confidant adviser, and authoritative teacher.
