- Abstract
Objectives. The main purpose of the study is to present typical and atypical CT aspects of renal oncocytoma. Material and methods. Retrospective study focused on renal tumor cases explored by computer tomography during January 2003 - December 2008 in the Department of Radiology and Medical Imaging IC Fundeni. Amongst 1458 patients diagnosed by imaging with renal tumor, we included in our study 10 (0,68%) cases with histopathological diagnosis of renal oncocytoma. Results. Sex distribution showed a men to female ratio of 1:1 which is different from the report found in the literature of 2:1. Age distribution revealed a peak incidence in the seventh decade of life which corresponds with literature data. CT's sensitivity in detection of oncocytomas was only 50%. In contrast, specificity was highest (100%). In two cases with histopathological diagnosis of oncocytoma, the CT diagnosis was renal cell carcinoma and in the other three, the CT findings could not be classified. We found no false positive results. Conclusions. Imaging findings required to suggest computed tomography diagnosis of oncocyitoma are: presence of stellate or polygonal shape scar, located centrally or eccentrically, hypodense scar compared with the rest of tumor tissue on nephrographic phase, homogeneous attenuation of tumor tissue excepting the scar, no calcification or intratumoral hemorrhage, no signs of metastatic disease.
