- Abstract
This article discusses the origin and evolution of plastids, which are organelles found in plant cells that are responsible for photosynthesis. The author explains that plastids originated from cyanobacteria that were engulfed by a protist, leading to a process of domestication and the development of the extant plastid. The article also explores the role of the peptidoglycan layer in plastid division and the diversity of chloroplast types in lycophytes. The author concludes that plastids have undergone a loss of individuality and a shift towards more conventional behavior over time.
