- Abstract
Józef Czapski's war diary, titled Dziennik wojenny, was published in 2022 and is considered one of the most remarkable diaries of the twentieth century. Czapski, a prominent figure in twentieth-century Poland, kept a diary for about seventy-five years, using it not only to write but also to draw, sketch, paint, and paste various elements. The diary covers his experiences during World War II when he was a soldier in the Polish Army and traveled to the Middle East. Czapski's diary reflects the tension between his duties as a soldier and his spiritual and artistic pursuits. It also explores themes of love and includes drawings that are integral to the entries. Interest in Czapski has grown in recent years, with exhibitions and publications dedicated to his life and work.
