- Abstract
The article discusses the history of Silver Reef, Utah. It describes the social customs and economic aspects of Silver Reef particularly in light of the town's dependence upon the mining and agricultural industries. It examines religious relations between Mormons and Catholics following the colonization of the area by Mormons seeking to grow cotton. It also compares and contrasts Silver Reef's historiography with that of the nearby city of St. George, which the author argues has been seen by many historians as a pious contrast to Silver Reef. He also argues that the relationship between St. George and Silver Reef was economically and socially beneficial to both cities and other towns in Washington County, Utah.
