- Title
Ignorance and Influence: U.S. Economists on Argentina's Depression of 1998-2002.
- Authors
SCHULER, KURT
- Abstract
The article discusses U.S. economists' commentary on Argentina's recession-turned-depression of 1998-2002. It cites the role of these economists in committing errors including mistaking Argentina's central banking system for a currency board and describing Argentina's exports as uncompetitive. The article highlights the role of the faulty analysis by U.S. and other economists in driving the Argentine government to devalue the Argentine peso and convert U.S. dollar assets and liabilities into pesos.
