- Abstract
The pathogenesis of Equine Herpesvirus type 1 (EHV-1) was valuated in hamsters(Mesocricetus auratus) inoculated by intranasal way for Brazilian strains A4/72,A9/92, A3/97, ISO 72/10 and Argentine AR4. There was acute evolution, with weight loss in the 3rd day post-inoculation (3rd d.p.i.), except to A9/92 (2nd d.p.i.). Neurological and respiratory symptoms were observed in the 2nd d.p.i. to A9/92 and in the 3rd d.p.i in the others. The histopathology revealed in the CNS congested meninges with mononuclear infiltrate, multifocal areas of hemorrhage in the neuropil, necrosis with mononuclear infiltrate and intranuclear eosinophilic inclusions in neurons and glial cells; in the lungs a discrete and diffuse infiltrate mainly mononuclear; intranuclear eosinophilic inclusions in syncytia and epithelia were observed only in ISO 72/10 and AR4. Hamsters inoculated with strain A9/922 presented more acute symptoms, and more severe pulmonary and cerebral histopathological lesions, suggesting this strain to be more virulent than the others.
