- Abstract
Since the 1990 geography of religion in Brazil has developed as a subfield of the area new cultural geography. Several approaches are characteristic for the study of the relationship between religion and space. There are projects which focus on the space structure of religion, while others analyze the conception of space and spatial religious human activities. Based on Ernst Cassirer's philosophy of symbolic forms, this article argues that the spacialization of religion can be considered an extension of man's intuitive action guided by religious sentiments and ideas. As a consequence the starting point for the study of the relationship between religion and space should be the analysis of the intuitive space of human religious emotions, conceptions and actions. In order to exemplify this approach the article refers to the case of the International Church of the Grace of God.
