- Abstract
With the effect from 1990, when Riga Polytechnic Institute was renamed Riga Technical University (RTU), the study system went through the comprehensive reorganization. In academic year 1991/1992 RTU a differential, three-stage educational system -- Bachelor, Master or Engineer and Doctor -- was introduced at RTU, the profession nomenclature of the USSR was abandoned, they stated to train multifunctional specialists, and it is notable that the profession nomenclature and curricula were developed by the forces of RTU. In subsequent years the curricula underwent several changes. In 1995 RTU introduced training of specialists in 18 academic programmes. With the effect from 1993/1994 academic year alongside with the academic education programmes RTU launched higher vocational (engineering) training programmes, and starting from 1996/1997 academic year -- two year programmes of vocational education at the RTU College. Within the period of 2000 - 2001, RTU, as well as curricula were subject to international expert review and accredited. Since 2003/2004 academic year RTU offers educational programmes of higher vocational training and after studying thereof alongside with the vocational qualification a vocational Bachelor's or Master's degree is granted.
