- Abstract
Purpose: In this study, we examined the etiology of occlusion of acute arterial occlusion (AAO), surgical techniques and early results of patients which were operated AAO. Material and Methods: Forty-three patients operated between 29 November 2005 and 24 December 2007 with upper extremity AAO. Eighteen patients were male (41.8%) and 25 female (58.2%). Mean age was found 47.2 (8-86) years. The reason was embolus in 18 (41.8%), thrombus in 18 (41.8%) and 7 (16.4%) of them could not be differentiated. Thirty- seven patients (86%) were dignosed with physical examination and hand dupplex and anjiography needed only in 6 (14%). Initially brachial thrombectomy was performed to all patients. Subclavian endarterectomy was needed in 2 patients and synthetic graft interposition in 1 patient between common carotid and brachial artery. Results: Rethrombectomy was performed in 10 patients (1 times in 5, 2 times in 3, 3 times in 1 and 9 times in 1 patient). In 4 patients amputation should be performed (9.3%). Two of them were finger amputation and 2 of them were amputated from forearm. Cerebrovascular event occurred in 3 patients and acute renal failure in 1.4 patients died at hospital and mortality was 9.3%. Mean hospitalization was 8.41 days. Conclusion: Acute upper extremity arterial occlusions must be surgically treated emergently. Determinating of etiology and planning to appropriate surgical and medical treatment at an early period may reduce the high mortality and morbiditiy.
