- Abstract
There has long been debate surrounding the skills and knowledge primary teachers need to effectively teach music in the classroom. There has also been considerable criticism of the way in which music contact hours have been consistently reduced in preservice primary education in universities over the last 20 years. At the same time, there has been little in the way of concrete recommendations about the knowledge and skills needed to teach music in the primary school in light of these developments. This article outlines a study that asked music education academics and key stakeholders in the field a number of questions including what knowledge and skills they felt were important for the teaching of music in the primary school. It would appear that nothing short of a Bachelor of Music as a starting point will adequately prepare any teacher, generalist or specialist, for teaching music
