- Title
Being Tim Tebow: The Rhetorical Construction of a Football Savior-Superhero.
- Authors
Watts, Rebecca B.
- Abstract
Sports journalists and fans often discussed former NFL and University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow as a savior or a superhero. This verbal and visual rhetoric juxtaposed Tebow's overtly stated Christian beliefs and oft-reported mission work in the orphanages of the Philippines and the prisons and hospitals of Florida alongside his leadership style and fearless style of play on the football field. Rhetorical analysis of these metaphoric clusters used in sports media reveals the incongruous social construction of Tebow's hypermasculinity and evangelical faith, resonating with the archetype of the hero brought low by the imperfection of his perfections.
