WARIKOO, K.
- Abstract
The article examines the role of Mahalla, the historically autonomous social institutions built around familial ties and Islamic rituals, in local self-governance in Uzbekistan. It observes that the Mahalla provides an indigenous platform where the Uzbeks bonded together and built their collective identities and reciprocal relationships. It concludes that the Mahalla has been developed as an institutional mechanism of the participative democracy by combining historical and cultural traditions.
