- Abstract
The article presents an historical overview of the development of retirement plans in 20th-century U.S. personal finance management. Details are given overviewing the popularity and diversity of retirement systems for seniors at the turn of the 21st-century and the particular history of the self-employed "Keogh" retirement plan is given. The emergence of the Keogh plan in 1962 is described, citing its stipulations and benefits for participants. The rise of Keogh plans in the 1960s and 1970s is charted and their significance as a precursor to the retirement structures in place in the 21st century is also analyzed.
