- Title
A SURVEY OF FIELD HOUSES AT SAPAWE, NORTH CENTRAL NEW MEXICO.
- Authors
SKINNER, S. ALAN
- Abstract
The article discusses an archaeological survey of field houses during an excavation at Sapawe, a Tewa site in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. The author suggests a lack of sites near the El Rito river could indicate the use of flood water farming by Pueblo inhabitants of the region. The sizes of rooms in field houses and their use as temporary shelters during summers by Pueblo people are noted. Stone implements discovered at the site included a projectile point, a scraper, a grinding tool and sherds of pottery. Rectangles formed from rows of stones were noted. The field houses at Sapawe are compared to field houses discovered at other archaeological sites.
