- Authors
LEWIS, RUPERT
- Abstract
This article presents historical information about the development of the Black Power Movement in Jamaica up to 1968. The author explains that Black Power had existed decades before the 1960s in two trends: the Garvey movement and Rastafari. The Black Power movement of the 1960s drew upon the traditions of the Garvey movement and the Rastafarians. The early activists were repressed by the British and were imprisoned and harassed. The author recalls his days as a student at the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the events surrounding the return of Marcus Garvey's body to Jamaica and a visit by Ethiopia's Emperor Haile Selassie. UWI lecturer Walter Rodney's participation in the Black Power movement is described.
