The publication of a selection of the contributions presented at two meetings held at the University of Naples“L’Orientale” in 1996 and in 1999 gives the opportunity to suggest a reading of a period of Italian psychiatry and psychoanalysis. The significance of that period is highlighted, and it is argued that it is exemplar also of current phenomena; their meaning goes beyond these specific disciplines and involves other fields such as religion and politics.
