- Abstract
The article presents a discussion related to the nature and varieties of a certain kind of self-control. Poised on one side are philosophers Jeanette Kennett and Michael Smith, and on the other side is philosopher Alfred Mele. The heart of the debate is to explain how an agent can exercise a special kind of self-control, what Kennett and Smith call "synchronic self-control." After critically examining the proposals of both sides and showing that neither of them is satisfactory, the author suggests that the difficulty of both sides in explaining synchronic self-control arises from their commitment to a widely received fundamental principle in the philosophy of action.
