- Title
If You Matter to Someone, There Is Always a Glimmer of Hope.
- Authors

- Abstract
The article discusses how to nurture character in children from abusive backgrounds and how to motivate them to succeed. Children who come from these backgrounds come to believe the verbal abuse they hear from their parents, the people who should be their first source of self-esteem. Programs in the schools can help instill ethics and character into such students. Character Counts!, an initiative from the Josephson Institute of Ethics, has succeeded in lowering the rates of disciplinary referrals in the schools in which it is implemented. Help from adults outside the immediate abusive family is also essential.
