The author talks about the need for a dedicated medical database of head and neck cancer (HNC) in the U.S. Topics discussed include the need to capture data of significant variables for every type of cancer including ultraviolet radiation exposure, history of sunburns, and the mitotic count in patients; the importance of smoking status, human papillomavirus status, and p16 status in HNC; and the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA), a genomic cancer database created by the National Institutes of Health.
