- Title
Towards a Re-definition of Femininity in Japanese Women's Speech.
- Authors
Hubbard, Maki
- Abstract
The article examines the widely accepted premise that politeness is the source of femininity in Japanese women's language. Specifically, it attempts to show that in urban Japan the intricate relation of Japanese women's language to class consciousness and social interaction belies any attempt to ascribe Japanese women's polite language to women's politeness. Japanese women employ more polite forms of language more often than men do, but it is erroneous to assume that they are more concerned or careful about being strategically polite than men, and that this is the source of femininity of Japanese women's language.
