- Abstract
Expressionism, besides its strict definition of an aesthetic current with manifestations in painting, literature and later in the cinema, is based on a general movement of ideas of a time and nation. Twentieth century Germany had a status of a great industrial country, however, the themes of the first films of that period, like The Nibelungos, Faust, Golem, Nosferatu, privileged a medieval past surrounded by old legends and do not reflect, as cinematographic production, the urban reality of a developed country. It was as if the Germans, when refusing the defeat at the end of the war, searched for consolation in a previous situation, through their legends and characteristic tales. In the representation of this universe, cinematographic expressionism does not see, but has visions. The facts and objects exist as internal visions and sensations they provoke. Hence, from the concrete object it goes to the abstract. The house, the street, the block of houses, the city, without loosing its objective and concrete shape, become subjective and abstract.
